Doctor Patient Medical Association officially launched in late Fall 2011, after many years in the making. We may be a new group, but we’ve been in the trenches on health care policy and freedom for a very long time. DPMA and PPA is a continuation of years of work representing other groups or associations. Our founder, Kathryn Serkes, represented a professional physician group, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, for more than 16 years. In those years, she came to understand the importance of the patient-physician relationship, and its crucial impact on the quality of medical care. She also heard the day-to-day stories from doctors on the frontlines about the massive- and sometimes ridiculous- --barriers they face in their efforts to maintain their autonomy and protect their ability to give the best, individualized care for every single patient. But what she also realized was that there was no group specifically dedicated to bringing doctors and patients together, and set out to found this new type of organization, intent that our purpose be to restore and preserve freedom in medicine for doctors AND patients. And to do so, we needed to be as inclusive as possible – to be non-partisan, and to work in a cooperative manner with existing groups since we all share the common bond of wanting quality, affordable care available for us and our families, and that doctors and medical professionals want to be able to provide that care. So over the course of two years of speaking to more than 40 grassroots groups, organizing rallies, and consulting with top physicians, she formed Doctor Patient Medical Association. She immediately brought on board Mark Schiller, MD, a San Francisco-based doctor, as her partner. He is also a Fellow at the Pacific Research Institute, and has been active in medical policy in various professional associations. Kathryn and Dr. Schiller have assembled a professional staff with years of experience in health care policy, political action at the state and federal level and association management. DPMA is invested in becoming a large national voice to protect freedom in medicine for both doctors and patients. Join today with thousands of doctors and patients - standing together for medical freedom. |

Written by Loren HealPhysicians reacted with shock and anger to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the President Obama’s health care law, according to poll data and the leaders of activist groups, which are continuing to fight the law in court and via political action. According to Kathryn Serkes, cofounder of the Doctor Patient Medical Association, a recent nationwide poll sponsored by her organization found 83 percent of U.S. physicians have considered leaving their practices due to President Obama’s law. “This not just something that started today, and it’s not something that just started with passage” of Obama’s law, said Serkes. “There have been developments in medicine that have made it very, very difficult and have put some seriously different pressures on doctors. But this bill has certainly brought things to a head.” |
