Saving Money on Prescriptions

Shop around for prices.
There is a wide variance from store to store.  For example, we have found prices on fluoxetine (generic Prozac) to vary from $13.00 to $170.00 for 100 of 20 mg dose.

Watch for sales on prescriptions you take regularly.  Drugstores will sometimes put commonly prescribed drugs on sale. Ask your doctor to write your prescription for a larger quantity and stock up.

Ask about generics.
While generics can save money, a word of caution is in order:  In some cases, one particular brand name drug is more effective than the generic substitute.  Be aware that the pharmacy may actually make more money on generics.  Your doctor should always have the final say.

Store drugs properly
Drugs need to be kept fresh in a cool, dry climate. Make sure those expensive drugs retain their effectiveness.  Certain drugs need special care and can lose potency even before the expiration date; for example, if nitroglycerin doesn't make your tongue tingle, you need a fresh bottle.

SPECIAL TIP ON PRESCRIPTIONS:
Check prices with the member warehouse stores in your area even if you’re not a member.  Most will allow non-members to buy from the pharmacy and they accept most plans.  The prices may be substantially lower!

Prices for many of the most common drugs are now posted on the Medicare website.  Even if you aren’t eligible for the new Medicare drug cards, this is a valuable tool to help compare prices in your area.

FREE & LOW COST PRESCRIPTIONS AVAILABLE FROM DRUG COMPANIES
Many of the most commonly-prescribed drugs are available from the manufacturers for free.
The industry has now set up a one-stop web site and phone line to see if you qualify:

DPMA in the News!

August 1st, 2012

Physicians reacted with shock and anger to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the President Obama’s health care law, according to poll data and the leaders of activist groups, which are continuing to fight the law in court and via political action.

According to Kathryn Serkes, cofounder of the Doctor Patient Medical Association, a recent nationwide poll sponsored by her organization found 83 percent of U.S. physicians have considered leaving their practices due to President Obama’s law.

“This not just something that started today, and it’s not something that just started with passage” of Obama’s law, said Serkes. “There have been developments in medicine that have made it very, very difficult and have put some seriously different pressures on doctors. But this bill has certainly brought things to a head.”
