House Republicans block Oregon’s health insurance exchange in surprise vote

A coalition of 30 Republicans and 1 Democrat in the state House of Representatives blocked approval of Oregon’s health insurance exchange this morning…
Last year, a bill to set up the exchange passed both houses of the Legislature with broad bipartisan approval.
House Bill 4164, which would give final approval to the exchange, cruised through its committee hearings without incident. But then, as the House met Monday morning to forward the bill to the Senate, Rep. Tim Freeman, R-Roseburg, made a motion to instead refer the bill to the Joint Ways and Means Committee, where he co-chairs a subcommittee on human services.
Freeman said questions had arisen in a recent caucus meeting of House Republicans over what commitments existed over federal funding of the program, as well as the potential for a change to the legal status of federal health care reforms, currently under consideration by the U.S Supreme Court…
The move led by House Republicans comes as Republicans in the Senate have vowed to block a companion bill on health care reform unless it is modified to include limits on lawsuit awards against health providers.

Dear Member of Congress:
On behalf of the undersigned members of the Health Care Freedom Coalition and our ally organizations, representing industry, policy, taxpayer, medical professional groups, and their millions of patients and members, are writing to say that we agree with the Obama Administration's conclusion that the CLASS Act is fundamentally flawed and cannot be salvaged.
Therefore, we urge Congress to move quickly to pass a permanent fix to this problem. In the House, we urge co-sponsorship of H.R. 1173, the “Fiscal Responsibility and Retirement Security Act of 2011,” authored by Charles Boustany, Jr., MD., and in the Senate, S. 720, the “Repeal the CLASS Entitlement Act” authored by Senator John Thune. These two bills seek to repeal the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act, signed in to law through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

After belching up the last of my black-eyed peas and rice, and searching in vain for one more bottle of bubbly to welcome the new year, I flipped on the tube and found it was indeed, primary season. And there were the Iowa hopefuls, belching up the last of their (now) tiresome stump rhetoric, and searching vainly for any believable reduction in government health care.
Okay, so maybe I was just crabby over the SEC not sweeping the Big Ten in the bowl games and not giving the candidates their due. After her foray into infectious prevention (the HPV vaccine brouhaha), Michelle Bachman accepted the home version of the game and packed it in, leaving only two-and-a-half candidates to continue the contest (while manic Newt continued as the GOP version of Charlie Sheen, "winning" all the way. Note: as the only physician in the bunch, no one ever asks footnote Ron Paul about health care, and neither then, shall we). So I thought, on the virtual plane to New Hampshire and then points south, let's review where the last players are on health care.

Putting "ACO" into the search window yielded at least one (probable) pornographic reference, which is a likely harbinger of the very near future. Fast on the heals (sic) of the widespread customer satisfactions garnered by H.M.O.'s in the 1990's, the Obama Care law bearing down on us seeks to replicate these successes. An Accountable Care Organization is a network of doctors and hospitals that will co-manage the health care for a minimum of 5,000 Medicare beneficiaries for at least three years.
